Jacob Harvey

Jacob W. Harvey was born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD. He received his Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in 2015 from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, SD, where he studied the methods of direct stone carving. Most of his early works were freeform, organic abstracts in which his only goal was to find the internal, essential forms of the stone. Steve Thomas, his sculpture professor, taught him the importance of simplicity and truth to the material, releasing the power and inherent beauty of stone. Since his time as an undergraduate, he has worked for local sculptor and owner of BronzeAge Art Casting, LLC, Rick Haugen. He has been with the foundry for nearly 6 years now and is now seeking ways of incorporating the lessons he's learned from carving stone with the vast expanse of knowledge of bronze casting. This piece, "Sketch of a human being", is the first in a series of miniature busts meant to be quick studies carved from blocks of clay and that will synthesize imagery and styles of many world cultures but in unspecific ways--they're just humans.
